Heading for your camping, motorhome and caravan holidays in Scotland? Well, if you like informal then Kings Green Caravan Park, in Dumfries and Galloway, is the campsite for you. Using four acres of land bequeathed to the villagers of Port William just over half a century ago, the caravan park is run as a community organisation, overseen by a volunteer committee and managed by two seasonal wardens, Hilary and Gail. All the profits from the site go back into the village for the benefit of residents. This campsite has tremendous benefits for visitors too, not least the wonderful views across Luce Bay to the Mull of Galloway and the Isle of Man. With a superb seaside location, the site is open for touring caravans, motorhomes and tents. There are no static caravans on site. As the caravan park is right on the beach, all 30 grass pitches have a sea view. Hook-ups are available to 21 pitches, most of which are level, although ramps or levelling devices are recommended. The free-draining ground also allows the site to accept larger units without any problems. Booking in advance is recommended if you are travelling some distance specifically to stay on site. The informality of the park allows those touring to simply turn up and pitch in a space that has not been allocated; the wardens will check you in when they next visit. Facilities on site include separate ladies' and gents' toilets and showers (accessed by keys from the wardens), a disabled toilet and basin (no shower), a laundry room and a dishwashing area, plus waste water and chemical WC disposal. There's a small information room too, plus Wi-Fi is available on a pay as you go basis from BT. Not that you should wish to spend too much time surfing the net. In close proximity are walks (with a public footpath that runs alongside the campsite, along the shore), cycle routes and launch facilities for small boats. Angling (sea, loch and river), garden tours and golf are all possible nearby, and The National Booktown for Scotland, Wigtown, is only 12 miles away. This appealing small town is a book-lover's haven with over 20 bookshops, the world's largest private newspaper archive and its very own book festival celebrating all things cultural, held every autumn. There's also the vast Galloway Forest Park, filled with picturesque forest trails, a forest drive and numerous lochs. Kirroughtree Visitor Centre, 20 miles north of the caravan park, is a great place from which to begin exploring the forest park. Port William, within which Kings Green Caravan Park is situated, just a short walk from the harbour, has safe, sandy beaches and rock pools where children can hunt for fish, crabs and prawns. The campsite is also situated next to one of the three children's play areas in the village. And when hunger bites, drop into The Monreith Arms for a drink and a meal, or The Clansman, a restaurant with a great reputation for good food, where booking is advised. And if you fancy some ultra-fresh fish without actually having to catch it yourself, Ferry Fish calls onto the site every Thursday afternoon. Kings Green Caravan Park might be one of the most relaxed campsites in the UK, but if you're spending your holidays in Scotland, it might just be exactly what you need.
