Wolohan's Silver Strand Caravan & Camping Park
Dunbur Upper, Co. Wicklow
Wolohan's Silver Strand Caravan & Camping Park is situated three miles from Wicklow town on the east coast of Ireland, overlooking Silver Strand beach. This beach is renowned as being one of Wicklow's most beautiful sandy beaches, with safe swimming and fun for all the family.
The Wolohan family has welcomed tents, touring and motor caravans for over 80 years to this 22-acre park, which is set among rural farmland with spectacular coastal views. Indeed, virtually every pitch receives a sea view. That's because the park offers a refreshingly informal layout that lets you pretty much pitch where you like, allowing for fire and safety regulations.
The site is made up from a series of fields and paddocks - select from a headland pitch with less shelter but incredible views, or a more sheltered position tucked up against a hedgerow and with an electric hook-up. There's access from all areas, either way, to Silver Strand Beach. You can also opt for a seasonal touring pitch that provides sea views right through from Easter to the end of September.
Two toilet blocks are available for campers, a dishwashing room with free hot water, an ice pack freezing service, a fully equipped launderette and clothes-washing sink, plus a substantial caravan and camping accessories shop is found on site. This not only sells last-minute essentials - this is worthy of a stay and a lengthy browse! In addition to a wide selection of tents, equipment and cookware, you'll find portable barbecues, gas appliances, outdoor furniture, body boards and wetsuits, fishing rods and tackle, plus sales of Camping Gaz and Calor Gas.
For those without their own touring facilities, Wolohan's also has a mobile home park separate from the touring areas. A traditional, all grass site, all mobile homes are laid out to provide peaceful sunny areas and are separated by spacious grassy lawns. Nearly all of the mobile home sites have sea views. But Wolohan's also has a great addition located on the campsite - a traditional 3-bedroom cottage that sleeps six, ideal for families or friends who wish to holiday together where some family members have camping facilities and others don't. The cottage also has sea views.
Wolohan's Silver Strand Caravan & Camping Park is 35 miles south of Dublin, with easy access from Dublin Port via the M50 and M11 motorways (there's a toll on the M50 motorway between junctions six and seven, which can be payable in advance via the motorway management website (www.eflow.ie)). Closer still to the campsite is the port at Dun Laoghaire, allowing visitors to be pitching up within half an hour from leaving the ferry.
In addition to nearby Dublin, the Republic of Ireland's cosmopolitan capital, this campsite is a great base from which to explore the beautiful Wicklow Mountains National Park on your camping and caravan holidays, where visitors can enjoy magnificent scenery while walking or cycling.
Another, lesser-known area, close to the campsite is the wonderful Vale of Avoca, south of Rathdrum, which is particularly stunning in springtime when the valley becomes filled with blossom. Of course, Wicklow's coast should not be forgotten, with the dramatic Wicklow Head just north of the campsite and, for lovers of golf, the spectacular location of Blainroe Golf Club, with sea views from all 18 holes and just minutes from Wolohan's Silver Strand Caravan & Camping Park.
